If only the game had ended after three quarters.
The San Marcos girls basketball team coughed up a fourth-quarter lead against Righetti in the Gold Coast Tournament on Friday, scoring only one point in a dismal final eight minutes and consequently fell 35-33.
After Righetti took the lead on a basket with 14 seconds left, the Royals could not get a shot off before the buzzer.
“The girls had a really great three quarters and then we got a little sloppy,” said head coach Kristyn Miller, who blamed a bad stretch with multiple turnovers as the final momentum changer.
Kimmy Sanchez led a balanced Royals scoring sheet with eight points. Marissa Unzueta and Kelley Chilton both had six.
The Royals will play in the ninth-place game against Moorpark on Saturday at 1 p.m. Agoura and Royal play for the tournament title at 7 p.m. in Oxnard, where the final day of the tournament is held.
Following the tournament, San Marcos has a game on Tuesday against Carpinteria before the weekend’s Tournament of Champions begins.
