Brennan Cusack wasted little time scoring in her first varsity soccer game and didn’t stop there, posting a hat trick in Cate’s 5-3 victory over visiting Villanova on Wednesday afternoon.
The sophomore scored in the sixth minute to put the Rams up early before junior Megan Falvey made it 2-0 with a 20-yard strike midway through the first half.
After Villanova struck back with two goals to equalize in the second half, Cusack went back on the attack and knocked two more past the keeper.
“It was my first time playing offense so I guess I really wanted it,” Cusack offered as an explanation for her success.
Annie Weis gave Cate an insurance goal after Villanova shook off Cusack’s two quick scores to get one of their own to draw within one at 4-3.
Cate head coach Lisa Holmes was happy with the offensive effort but as coaches do, found some things to work on going forward for the Rams (1-0).
“We have a very experienced backfield but we’re not playing together in a way that I’d like us to. We’re not marking up in the midfield like we’ll need to later in the season,” she said.
