Erin Stone scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 65th minute, to give Laguna Blanca a wild 5-4 non-league girls soccer win over Bishop Diego on Monday.
Stone controlled a flicked ball after an indirect free kick and buried her shot for the winning goal.
“Our team underestimated how good Bishop was,” said Laguna coach Greg Luna. “They played well. Fortunately we scored one more than they did.”
Stone started the scoring with a goal within the first 10 minutes of the match.
Bishop Diego equalized in the 32nd minute when Candace Melgoza finished a pass from Nicole Tetherow.
Boo Goldmuntz jumped on a poor clearance by Bishop and scored to put the Owls back on top 2-1 in the 35th minute.
The Cardinals (1-5) would respond two minutes later and tie the score at 2-2. Sheena Martinez pounced on a rebound of a shot by Michelle Salazar and found the back of the net.
Laguna Blanca made it 3-2 when Ari Rodriguez scored 30 seconds just before the halftime whistle.
Bishop coach Brent Gonsalves said his team suffered a blow when one of his center backs went down with a sprained ankle in the 13th minute.
“We had to readjust back there,” he said. “I thought they did a pretty good job. We weren’t disorganized, we just had to reshuffle.”
Tetherow tied the score for the Cardinals in the 51st, finishing a cross from Martinez.
But Laguna Blanca (5-2) would retake the lead seven minutes later on a goal by Fiona Jessup.
Bishop pulled even one more time in the 62nd minute, with Alison Carr scoring off a cross from Martinez.
“I promised the parents and the players that we would play attractive, attacking soccer,” Gonsalves said. “Laguna Blanca played just as attractive. It was a fun game, but not for the coaches.”
