The San Marcos girls basketball team took it to La Reina on Thursday in a 77-34 thrashing at the Fillmore Tournament. With a win against L.A. Baptist on Friday, the Royals (2-1) will have a shot at the tourney title on Saturday.
Claudia Ochoa led the Royals in scoring with 17 points, including three baskets from 3-point land.
“Ochoa really got us going in the third quarter,” explained assistant coach Alex Sheldon, who said Ochoa’s first three-pointer opened the floodgates for the Royals in the second half.
Kelley Chilton quickly made another and the Royals made eight 3-point baskets in the second half while outscoring La Reina 47-9.
Marissa Unzueta led the San Marcos defense with 11 steals and added six rebounds and 12 points in a stat-sheet filling performance. After Ochoa, Chilton was the Royals’ second leading scorer with 14. Kelsey Brown, Lindsay Hyslop and Vanessa Curiel contributed 9,8, and 7 points respectively in a game where every Royal found the scoring column.
Friday’s game against L.A. Baptist begins at 3:15 p.m.
