Youth is bliss so far for the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team, which started three freshmen in Thursday’s 51-48 victory over Cabrillo in the Bryan Ayer Tournament in Lompoc for the squad’s second win in as many tries on the season.
“We started three freshmen and we were able to weather the storm and get the victory,” said head coach Maynard Pilapil.
That storm came in the form of Cabrillo’s Ashley Bonenfont, who scored 32 of the Conquistadores’ 48 points.
“We couldn’t stop her,” admitted Pilapil.
DP needed to rally in the fourth quarter as they were down 37-40 at the end of the third.
Senior Meghan Murphy, who led the Chargers with 19 points, showed her underclassmen teammates what it’s like to be grace under pressure, tallying 11 points in the second half and she knocked home two late free throws to give the Chargers a three-point cushion and the win.
Freshman Jessica Escalante scored 15 points but was limited due to foul trouble. Sara Crane and Jasmine Nata both put up six in the scoring column.
Dos Pueblos faces Pinole Valley on Friday, a team from inner-city Richmond that the Chargers upset last season when Pionole was ranked 15th in the country.
While the team’s ranking is not so high this year, Pilapil is expecting a tough game. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
