DP stays ahead of sharp-shooting Northwood

Northwood made more shots from beyond the arc (10) than inside of it (nine), but Evan Muñoz hit six of his own and Dos Pueblos (7-6) bounced back from Friday’s loss to Burroughs with a 62-51 win over the Timberwolves (2-10) Saturday in the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic.

“It’s been unbelievable the way he’s been shooting,” said senior Robert Vickers of Muñoz. “It seems like everything he throws up there has been going in… We were flat yesterday, but I thought we came out today and played with a lot more energy.”Muñoz scored all of his points off of the treys, while Vickers added 14 and Malik Heptot had 12. DP was facing a zone defense from the Wolverines, who were determined to hound the 6-foot-9 Heptot. Coach Joe Zamora said the Chargers have not faced much zone over the past few years, mainly because they haven’t had a kid with Heptot’s size.

Zamora was happy with DP’s effort against the scrappy and physical Wolverines.

“I had three of my seniors here last night watching their game with me, and I said this team was going to be scrappy and physical and get in our heads… I was proud of the way my guys responded to that,” he said.

DP plays Oak Park on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
