As is the case with many sports, water polo’s style of play varies depending on the region in which it’s played.
The San Marcos girls team is finding out that things get much more physical further south.
“We’re getting into these real physical games and we’re losing around four goals just because they’re more physical than us,” said coach Brian Roth after the Royals fell 14-6 to Mater Dei at the Villa Park Tournament on Friday.
Jade Fitzgerald scored four goals and Zoe Kirker had a goal and did a nice job defensively on the Monarchs’ top player, but the Royals fell behind 4-1 and never caught up.
“The refs don’t blow the whistle as much down here, but that’s not a bad thing,” said Roth. “We have to learn how to play in those situations.”
Autumn Lovett had five saves and two steals in goal, while Flo Chardon also scored for San Marcos.
