A fast start and finish helped SBCC claim its first tournament trophy of the season Tuesday with an 80-69 men’s basketball victory over Butte in the consolation final of the Hancock Holiday Classic at Santa Maria. The Vaqueros (7-12) won their first trophy in their sixth appearance in a third-place or consolation final.
David Lane scored 27 points and all-tournament choice Mark Keeten added 20 for SBCC, which led its Northern California opponent 42-22, thanks to 60 percent shooting in the first half. The Vaqueros made 15-of-25 from the field and 6-9 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.
“We executed well and played good defense, which led to good scoring opportunities,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We came out and played at a high level.”
Ezra Fantl and Santa Barbara High product Joseph Bregante scored eight apiece. Bregante hit 2-2 from long distance and scored all his points in the first half.
Butte got within three, 63-60, before the Vaqueros built the lead back up to 12 with a minute to play.
SBCC completes nonconference play on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against 13th-ranked Reedley.
