Kohler cleans up the boards in Bishop win

La Reina has two players who stand at around 6-foot-2, and in girls basketball terms, that height can earn you the title of a “tree.”

Janelle Kohler worked her way through the forest Friday, grabbing 18 rebounds to go along with seven points as Bishop Diego downed the Regents 52-33 at the Fillmore Tournament.

Allison Breuer scored a game-high 13 points for the Cardinals, while Kelsey Stimson added 11 and Courtney Houston eight. All three are sophomores, giving coach Jeff Burich plenty of optimism for the future of the program.

“We knew we had that trio, but this is the first time they all came off the bench and how they played really gives us a lot of confidence,” he said.

It was a whistle-fest for both teams in the physical contest, with Bishop committing 24 and La Reina 22. The Cardinals were whistled for 15 in the first quarter alone, putting the starters in early foul trouble, but the youngsters stepped in and held steady.

Bishop (1-2) plays the winner of Thacher and Paracelete in Saturday’s fifth-place game at 11 a.m.
