Dos Pueblos’ Karina Evans picked her spots and picked them well on Friday, netting two goals for the Chargers girls soccer team in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over West Ranch at the Buena Tournament.
The usually-starting defender pulled herself from the starting lineup prior to Friday’s game because of illness, but told coach Kymberly Williams-Evans that she could play a limited role off the bench.
After the Chargers spotted West Ranch two goals in the first 30 minutes, Evans entered the game in the midfield and got one back just before halftime.
Sophomore Claire Mathews evened the match at two in the second half on a 25-yard, high-arcing ball that was out of the reach of West Ranch’s keeper.
Evans returned to the bench after halftime but was called upon again midway through the second frame. With eight minutes remaining, Evans was at the right place at the right time and knocked a loose ball into the net for the Chargers’ 3-2 lead.
Coach Williams-Evans credited keeper Meagan Bellefeuille with making several key stops to keep West Ranch from scoring again in the second half to help preserve the win for Dos Pueblos (2-5).
DP continues tournament play on Saturday with an 11 a.m. matchup with Chatsworth and will play another game that afternoon against a still-undecided opponent.
