It was a bizarre, roller-coaster loss for the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team Saturday.
The Chargers were up by 14 after just one quarter, but ended up falling to Chaminade 57-56 despite a 27-point performance by freshman Jessica Escalante.
“Obviously it was a loss on the scoreboard, but these girls are playing above or beyond what’s expected,” said coach Maynard Pilapil. “It was crazy; it was just a schizophrenic game.”
The quarter-by-quarter scoring line for DP (6-5) certainly backs that up — 24, 4, 7, 21.
“We didn’t handle adversity too well in the third quarter. We got really sloppy and they realized they could get back into the game,” said Pilapil.
Chaminade hit a trey in the waning moments and DP had an opportunity to get the win but turned the ball over.
Meghan Murphy scored 14 points, and is displaying strong leadership as the team’s only senior, according to Pilapil.
DP will get a chance to take on crosstown-rival Santa Barbara on Monday.
“They’re the team in this town right now, and it’s going to be a big test for us,” said Pilapil.
