Dons turn on blasters, win going away

The Santa Barbara girls basketball team took off like a rocket on Friday, turning a game that was close through three quarters into a 66-35 blowout win over Santa Ynez in the Gold Coast Tournament.

The Dons, led by Geena Boscacci’s game-high 13 and Rebecca Griffin’s 12, outscored the Pirates 27-6 in the fourth quarter to earn a spot in Friday’s fifth-place game against West Ranch.

“We always work together to try to get her shots and myself shots,” said Boscacci of Griffin. The two hit all five of the Dons’ 3-point shots.

Boscacci also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Brandi Blackwell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Annie Fredrickson led Santa Ynez with 13 points.

“Santa Ynez is a young team and they’re getting better every game,” said Dons head coach Andrew Butcher, whose team beat the Pirates 64-42 in its season opener.

“They were in the game a long time,” noted the long-time coach.
