Perfection ended for the Santa Barbara boys soccer team on Tuesday, but a second-place finish in one of the most prestigious tournaments in Southern California isn’t something to fret about.
The Dons fell to 12-1 in a 2-1 loss to Loyola in the championship game of the South Torrance Tournament.
The Cubs scored on an 18-yard free kick in the 22nd minute to go up 1-0, but Luis Santana scored off of a cross by Brian Joseff in the 43rd. Santa Barbara missed a clearance opportunity in the 70th and Loyola capitalized with the game-winner.
Jesse Gonzalez, Christian Pardo and Marcos Lopez were selected to the all-tournament team, and coach Todd Heil is very happy with the the Dons played.
“Absolutely. We’ve been playing very well. Unfortunately we just made two mistakes and against a team like that it’s going to hurt you,” he said.
The Dons play Oxnard in the Buena Tournament on the second day of 2009.
