Talk about ups and downs.
Santa Barbara’s boys basketball team allowed 22 points in the first quarter and zero in the second, eventually defeating Arleta 59-49 in the Pacifica Tournament.
“It was just a very unfocused start,” said assistant coach John Slavin. “We had a real attitude adjustment in the fourth quarter.”
Roberto Nelson scored 21 points and Freddy Maldonado made his debut after football season and scored five. Spencer Thomas had eight rebounds and four assists with just one turnover.
Slavin was particularly pleased that the Dons’ lock-down defense in the second carried over into the third, which has been a trouble-spot for the Dons thus far.
As for an explanation for the drastic 22-to-0 differential between quarters?
“Don’t get me started. That’s why I have grey hair,” he said.
The Dons (3-5) play Santa Paula on Thursday.
