Nathan Saito hit a pair of 3-pointers early on in a monster fourth quarter for the Carpinteria boys basketball team on Wednesday, as the Warriors outscored Santa Ynez 26-10 in the period to pick up a 65-53 win in pool play of the Jim Bashore Classic.
“As much as it was offense, the defense holding them to 10 was big too,” said Carpinteria coach John Ward.
Manny Rodriguez scored a quiet 28 points with seven rebounds and four steals, while Isacc Cervantes had nine points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
“That’s good stuff. We needed that,” said Ward of Cervantes’ contributions.
The Pirates (2-4) had a 31-26 lead at halftime and led 43-39 heading into the fourth. Saito’s treys put Carpinteria in the lead, and the Warriors found some more looks down low to pull away at the end.
Kevin Lusterio had another top-notch night for the Warriors (4-1), scoring 14 points with five steals and four assists.
Carpinteria plays at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
