Carpinteria’s Kevin Lusterio had a fantastic line for a point guard, scoring 18 points with five assists and no turnovers (he also grabbed four rebounds) as the Warriors (5-1) took down Nordhoff 55-41 on the second day of the Jim Bashore Classic.
“He took very good care of the basketball and was just in charge of the game,” said coach John “So-and-So” Ward. With star big-man Manny Rodriguez caught up in the Rangers’ 1-3-1 zone early in the game, Carpinteria kept it outside and went 4-for-6 from downtown in the first quarter. The Warriors finished with eight treys on the night, including four from Lusterio and three from Nathan Saito, who continues to emerge as a sharp-shooter and scored 15 on the night.
Rodriguez didn’t get lost in the shuffle by any means, ending up with another big game — 19 points and 14 boards, shooting 7-for-9 from the field.
The 5-1 start, as well as the team’s new jerseys, have the Warriors looking sharp in the early season.
The Warriors play Friday at 6:30 p.m.
