Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team notched a shutout Friday as the Cardinals defeated Santa Clara 3-0.
“It was an excellent win, and we played very well,” said Gonzalves. “Coming off of the (season-opening) loss to Carpinteria, it was a good response. It was one of those days when everything went well and we really showed our potential.
“I’ve only been with the team for two years, but some of the girls said we hadn’t recorded a shutout for awhile, so it was a shining moment.”
Mariel Santana assisted Sheena Martinez on the first goal, followed by scores from Candace Melgoza and Michelle Salazar. Salazar’s goal was assisted by Melgoza.
On Saturday, the Cardinals (1-2) faced a Nordhoff team that Gonzalves said was one of the best teams he’s seen in a while, falling 5-0. It was 3-0 until the waning minutes, but the Rangers netted two quick goals before the final whistle.
“The were impressive, and I think we used up a lot of energy in Friday’s win,” said the coach. “But I think we learned a lot about what we need to work on.
Despite the five goals, April Nicholson made a strong seven saves in goal.
