Bishop keeps rolling to start season

The Bishop Diego boys basketball team is now three-for-three on the season thanks to a 61-50 victory over New Roads in the Brickhouse on Thursday night.

The victory sets up a Friday matchup with Besant Hill, a team featuring a 6-foot-9 player being recruited by the likes of UCLA. That game is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Bishop.

On Thursday, freshman Elias Muñoz led the Cardinals in scoring again, this time racking up 14 points and adding 12 rebounds. Hayden Slaught chipped in 12 and another freshman, Sam Kwock, put in 11 more.

Kwock dished out four assists and recorded four steals.

“He does a good job of being electricity off the bench,” said head coach Ray Vazquez of the 5-foot guard.

Bishop held an 11-point lead at halftime and outscored New Roads in every quarter but the last when the game was well under control.

The Cardinals came up with 17 steals, a stat coach Vazquez highlighted because the Cardinals never pressed during the game.
