An early technical took away Bishop Diego’s floor general, and the Cardinals had a tough second half in Monday’s 69-46 loss to South Pasadena at the Holiday Classic.
Freshman point guard Paul Garcia was called for a technical early in the game, and Bishop’s policy says that any player who receives one sits out for the rest of the game as well as the contest after that, leaving the team Garcia-less in Tuesday’s matchup against Northwood at 11:30 a.m.
Senior Art Gonzales was a bright spot for the Cardinals, scoring in every quarter en route to 12 points, five rebounds and a 4-for-4 effort from the charity stripe. The Cardinals had a 25-23 lead at the half, but committed 14 of their 22 turnovers after the break.
“It was rough in the second half,” said coach Ray Vazquez. “Without Paul out there there were visible leadership issues as far as play-calling. But overall we’re getting better, and our league is nothing like we’re seeing now.”
The Cardinals are to 5-7 through a strong preseason schedule which should have them ready for a run at the Frontier League title.
