The Bishop Diego boys soccer team staked Grace Brethren to a 2-0 lead in the first half on Thursday, and could not recover in the second despite some strong play from the team and a goal from Ryan Landeros, falling 2-1 in the Cardinals’ season opener.
Bishop head coach Jesus Landeros said the Cardinals were a little disorganized in the first half, and as a result, gave up two goals on free kicks in the opening 25 minutes. The first came on a corner kick and the second on a direct ball from 20-yards out.
Ryan Landeros pulled Bishop within one in the second half thanks to a nice ball from midfielder Michael Morando. The Cardinals had more opportunities to score in the second frame, but the equalizer proved to be elusive.
Coach Landeros praised the play of defenders Emilio Ruggierro and Brad Waples and said that junior keeper Garret Garcia had a strong performance in goal.
The Cardinals are playing in the Tri-Valley League this year after being moved up from the Frontier League.
