Friday night is “Movie Night” for the SBCC football team, and the Vaqueros watched the 1999 flick “Boondock Saints” this week. It’s about a pair of vigilante brothers who spend their days pumping evil-doers full of bullets.
Appropriately, Saturday night’s game against visiting L.A. Valley was a shootout.
SBCC (5-4, 5-1) extended its winning streak to five games after an 0-4 start, holding off a late surge by the Monarchs (5-4, 4-2) in a 55-52 decision at La Playa Stadium. The 107 combined points were a school record and just one of the many statistics that painted the picture of the evening.
Antelope Valley crushed L.A. Pierce 42-7 to clinch a tie for the American Pacific Conference title at 6-0. Even if the Marauders lose to Valley next Saturday, they would still win the title because they beat SBCC in the APC opener, 28-14.
The Vaqueros, meanwhile, have hopes of a berth in the Tremblay Financial Services Bowl, which will take place right at home at La Playa Stadium.
The Monarchs came into the contest with the best turnover margin in the conference at +15, but the Vaqueros forced six turnovers, including five interceptions of quarterback Bret Visciglia, whose line was stellar otherwise: he completed 31-of-52 passes for 523 yards and six TDs.
“Our defense just stepped up and showed that we have a lot of playmakers on the defensive side of the ball,” said sophomore linebacker Nate Goldie, who had one of the interceptions. Lamont Dupree had two of them with a return total of 122 yards, including an 80-yard pick-six just a couple of minutes into the game.
Running back Trayone Harris got the good karma he deserved after finding $4,200 on the ground at the bank earlier this week and returning it to its rightful owner, passing one of the classic “what-would-you-do-if” tests of character with flying colors.
He hit the jackpot on the field Saturday with 20 carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns, including an impressive 38-yard scamper up the left side of the field with 1:22 remaining.
The Vaqueros entered the fourth quarter with a cushy 45-24 lead, but L.A. Valley’s offense — which produced a total of 694 yards on the night — needed to be taken seriously until the final tick.
Return-man extraordinaire Jakharie Murphy helped break an early 7-7 tie with a 62-yard kick return that set up Harris’ first scoring run and made it 14-7. Murphy would do it once again in the first half, using a 77-yard return to set up an Oscar Loza touchdown on a 4-yard reverse.
Loza made a big catch with 52 seconds left in the half, hauling in a 46-yard bomb from quarterback Austin Civita. He finished with 140 yards on seven catches, but injured his knee late in the game.
The Vaqueros started to pull away in the third, but the Monarchs marched right back and were relentless on their final drives. Harris’ final touchdown run put the Vaqs up 55-45, but the Monarchs would respond on a 39-yard pass from Visciglia to Gerald Scarber.
SBCC held on to Valley’s onside kick and ran out the clock. Coach Craig Moropoulos said after the game that the team’s resurgence from an 0-4 start has been one of his most enjoyable as a coach, but that the team always believed.
The fact that the Vaqueros have been outscored 258-168 on the year but are still 5-4 shows how different those first four contests were.
“We realized that the first four losses were against teams that were in bowl games last year,” he said. “We stayed together and knew we were a good football team.”
SBCC closes out the regular season on Saturday at East Los Angeles.
