GLENDALE — SBCC watched an 11-point halftime lead disappear on Friday and Victor Valley took advantage of 42 free throws to hand the Vaqueros a 94-84 men’s basketball loss at the Glendale Tournament.
The Vaqueros led 53-42 at intermission of the season opener and 80-72 with 6:28 to play before the Rams ended the game on a 22-4 run. Victor Valley made 24-of-42 free throws compared to 17-21 for SBCC.
Santa Barbara commited 20 turnovers and was outscored 11-0 to open the second half.
“We commited a lot of fouls but we were still within one with a minute to play,” said Vaquero coach Morris Hodges. “Then we missed a wide-open 3 and had to start fouling.”
Mark Keeten led SBCC with 19 points, Lucky Teeguarden had 14 and Brandon Barreras and Chris Lewis contributed nine apiece.
The Vaqueros will take on Glendale in the consolation game at 1 p.m. today. Mirarmar beat Glendale 82-80 on Friday.
