The San Marcos girls volleyball team put together a deep run at the Redondo Power Tournament over Halloween weekend, winning three matches before falling to West Torrance in the final on Saturday evening.
The Royals beat Vista and Burroughs on Friday and came back Saturday morning to sweep Torrance in the semifinal. San Marcos lost only one set on the way to the tournament final in a format where each match is best of five.
In the final, which was best two-of-three, San Marcos came up short 25-21, 25-20.
“It really was a boost for us during this part of the season,” said coach Roger Kuntz of the overall result, the best for the Royals this season. “I think we really improved as a team and our chemistry is outstanding right now.”
San Marcos (15-8, 3-3) has two Channel League matches remaining (Santa Barbara on Tuesday and Ventura on Thursday) to try to secure a CIF playoff berth.
Kuntz had great efforts from every position. Passing was solid thanks to Emma Campbell, Hannah Warwick and Kristin Schroeder. Kristen Kuntz dished out set after set to outside hitters Flo Chardon, Anna Gerngross, and middles Grace Conner and Jenn Waddill. Off the bench, Kuntz got contributions from Kristin Beifuss, Linsdey Weintraub and Robin Zelco.
