Sophomore Katie Randall scored a career-high 23 points Saturday, including a trio of 3-pointers, to lead the SBCC women’s basketball team to a 77-66 victory over San Mateo in the opening round of its own MTXE Tournament at the Sports Pavlion.
The Vaqueros led 35-30 in their season opener and broke the game open with a 12-0 burst to start the second half. Randall hit three consecutive treys and SBCC made six steals during the run, stretching the lead to 47-30.
SBCC won despite commiting 46 turnovers. San Mateo had even more trouble with 53 turnovers.
“We have a lot of freshmen and this was their first game,” noted Vaquero coach Sandrine Krul. “We played with composure when we needed to. They were athletic but our press bothered them.”
The Vaqueros advance to the championship semifinals, where they will take on Antelope Valley at 8 p.m. on Saturday. In other first-round games, Orange Coast routed Long Beach 75-39; Santa Ana defeated Moorpark 54-34 and Antelope Valley edged Riverside 66-61.
