POMONA — Senior Walter Thompson (Venice) scored a career-high 19 games in his four-year college career and Dahir Nasser and Larry Gordon each scored in double figures as Cal Poly Pomona defeated visiting Westmont 77-62 in nonconference men’s basketball Saturday night at Kellogg Gym.
Thompson, who transferred from Division I Portland, was eight-of-16 from the floor and also dished out five assists in 30 minutes of play. Nasser, a junior from Phoenix, scored 15 points with four assists in 36 minutes, while Gordon (Pomona) reached double digits for the 33rd straight game. The preseason All-American was five-of-8 from the floor and also had 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Cal Poly Pomona, now 2-0 overall, led from the outset and owned a 43-23 halftime lead. The Broncos fired 56.7 percent from the floor (17 of 30) in the first half and held the Warriors to just seven field goals in the opening 20 minutes.
The Broncos outrebounded the Warriors 40-28. Junior Austin Swift (Santa Cruz) added nine points and freshman Matthew Rosser (Temecula), junior Tobias Jahn (Babenhausen, Germany) and freshman Dwayne Fells (Fullerton) each had six.
Westmont’s Dan Rasp scored a game-high 20 points on the strength of 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Cal Poly Pomona is off for two weeks and resumes action on Dec. 5 when it begins California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
