Owls top OVS, keep playoff hopes alive

Laguna Blanca’s 8-man football squad kept its postseason hopes alive and also got to give playing time to some younger players in a 40-25 win at Ojai Valley School on Saturday.

“It was a beautiful day in Ojai. We went up 21-0 and just cleared the bench,” said coach Ray Robitaille. “We put the JV kids on the field and the freshmen and sophomores were able to keep it going.”

The Owls (3-3, 2-1 Condor League) even got to feature a fraternal force in the backfield, as senior Hunter Rusack switched from guard to fullback and blocked for his brother, sophomore Austin.

“Austin was tearing it up back there behind his brother. He must have had at least 70 yards rushing,” said Robitaille.

The coach also highlighted the play of sophomores Fletcher Sipple and Chase McAdams, as well as classmate Kevin Drew, who played with a cast due to a thumb injury but still snagged an interception and took it to the house.

Laguna Blanca hosts Thacher in its season finale on Saturday, and a win would create a 3-way tie atop the Condor League with Cate and the Toads. In that case the Condor League has a coin-flip system in place in which one team will advance to the postseason. How that process works is unclear to Robitaille.

“I think we should just stand in a circle and Ro-Sham-Bo,” he joked.
