A day after Westmont Men’s Basketball team gave head coach John Moore his three hundredth win at Westmont, the team gave the coach a birthday present of his three hundred first win with a 72-49 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State. Moore’s Westmont record now stands at 301-163 and his career record at 380-237.
“Our opponent scored only once in their first 14 possessions,” reported Moore, “letting us jump out to a 14-2 lead.”
The Warriors were led in scoring by junior guard Andrew Schmalbach who recorded 13 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Tyler Dutton recorded 10 points on two three-pointers and four-of-five free throw shooting.
“I think Ryan Aijian had his best game as a collegian,” said Moore. “He scored eight points, two assists and two steals and played very well. Evan Haines scored six points on three of six shooting and pulled down six rebounds. C.J. (Chris Jackson) also had a very nice game. He didn’t score points, but he does a lot of nice things without scoring any points.”
Jackson recorded five assists and three steals while committing only two turnovers.
The Warriors led by 19 at half time before the Rangers made a mini run to cut the deficit to 14. But back-to-back three pointers by Schmalbach and Dutton restored the Warriors to a 20-point advantage.
Westmont made 26 of 54 from the field (48.1%) while holding Northwestern Oklahoma State to 17 of 55 (30.9%). Westmont connected for 8 of 15 attempts from beyond the arc (53.3%).
Next up for the Warriors is a trip to Pomona next Saturday for a date with the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
