Kevin Lunn set the bar very high when he decided to make a top-5 finish in the state cross-country meet one of his goals.
The Laguna Blanca star jumped over that bar Saturday in Fresno, finishing third out of 169 in the race with a time of 16:01. He even led the way at one point.
“He would have loved to have broken 16 minutes, but he’ll surely take it,” said coach Bob Lunn. “I was blown away by his performance.”
Kevin Lunn had a monster season, winning the county title as well.
“Right from the beginning of the season my goal was to finish in the top three in state, but I kind of moved it back as the season went along,” he said. “I just started feeling good halfway through the race and just went with the other two runners in the lead pack.”
Lunn said he plans to run in college, and is hoping his best is still ahead of him.
Two other runners made up the contingent of Owls, Santa Barbara’s only representatives in the meet. Sophomore Parker Lilly took 29th place in 16:50 and Sarah O’Connor was 39th in the girls race with a mark of 20:36.
Coach Lunn said that most runners have a tougher time with the course in Fresno than they do at Mt. SAC, but O’Connor actually improved her time by 30 seconds. Lilly started out strong and faded just a bit at the end. He is expected to be one of the Condor League’s top runners as a junior next year.
