Kevin Lunn and Sarah O’Connor led the way for the Laguna Blanca cross-country team as the Owls took second place in both the boys and girls competitions at Thacher in the final Condor League meet of the season.
The top three teams in each race advance to the CIF prelims at Mt. SAC a week from Saturday.
“It was a good day for both teams. There weren’t really any surprises,” said coach Bob Lunn.
Kevin Lunn won the boys race on the Toads’ hilly course with a time of 16:50, while Parker Lilly was fourth in 17:52 and Zach Campbell 10th in 19:00. Coach Lunn also highlighted a strong run by Jeffery Schultz, who finished 13th in 19:08.
Cate’s Mackenzie Walsh won the girls heat in 21:28, while O’Connor was the top Owl with a time of 21:58 — good enough for third place. Lunn also highlighted the performance of freshman Mackenzie Campbell, who has recovered from a sprained ankle and was the third Owl to finish, taking 8th place overall.
Walsh’s performance leads the Ram girls to a third-place finish and a trip to Mt. Sac. Walsh’s sister, Adrian, was Cate’s next best runner in 11th (24:00).
Lunn said it would be a disappointment if both Laguna Blanca teams do not advance from the prelims into the CIF finals.
Cate’s boys team finished fourth, led by junior Mark Mullan’s time of 20:18 for 24th place. The rest of the Rams weren’t far behind, with Spencer McAvoy, Joe Gottwald, Omar Khurshid, and Jason Park all clocking under 21 minutes.
