The DP girls volleyball team had a very short stay in its first-ever visit to the state tournament.
“I’d say for me the state tournament was like icing on the cake,” said Chargers head coach Dwayne Hauschild. “After such a great season it was really cool that we actually qualified for the first time.”
The Chargers travelled down to San Diego to face a team that was ranked No. 1 in the country for most of the season, La Costa Canyon, and fell 25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-10.
Carly Wopat had 16 kills and her sister Sam collected nine digs with five aces for the Chargers, who also got eight kills from Caitlin Racich.
“That’s a team that has a strong setter, consistent passing and everybody hits with authority,” said Hauschild of the Mavericks (34-1), who also noted that there was a rowdy crowd on hand to greet the Chargers (28-8).
DP returns a big chunk of talent to next year’s squad, and Hauschild said “now they know what it takes to play at the highest level.”
