VENTURA — Ventura College scored in the 25th minute on Friday night and then held off SBCC 1-0 in a first-place women’s soccer showdown.
The 10th-ranked Vaqueros (9-1-4, 4-1-0) suffered their first loss of the year and fell from the top spot in the WSC North for the first time this year. No. 7 Ventura improved to 10-1-3 and 4-0-0.
“We defended very poorly on their goal,” said Vaquero coach John Sisterson. “We just didn’t have the fire tonight, they were quicker to the ball.
“We didn’t have any shots on target and we didn’t deserve to win. It was disappointing but it was also a wakeup call.”
SBCC opens the second round of WSC play on Oct. 24 with an 11 a.m. home game against Moorpark
