Despite a goal from senior midfielder Jon Schoff in the sixty-fourth minute of Saturday’s game against #13 Concordia (8-5-1, 5-2 GSAC), Westmont men’s soccer suffered a 2-1 defeat in Irvine. The loss drops the Warriors’ record to 5-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings.
After a scoreless first half, Concordia’s Jon Carlson scored in the fifty-sixth minute after receiving a pass from Jeff Clark the put him one-on-one with Westmont keeper Justin Etherton. Schoff headed in the ball just eight minutes later off a cross from Harrison Hill to tie the game at one goal apiece. But Clark took a cross himself in the seventy-first minute and headed it into the net, producing the game winner for the Eagles.
Even with the loss, the Warriors remained in a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference standings with Hope International and California Baptist. Hope International lost on Saturday by a score of 3-1 to Point Loma Nazarene while California Baptist lost to Fresno Pacific 3-0.
Azusa Pacific and Vanguard sit atop the conference with 5-0-1 records (16 points) while Concordia is in third place with 15 points. Teams receive three points for a win and one for a tie. In fourth place is Fresno Pacific (8-2-1, 4-2-1 GSAC) with 13 points. The Master’s (8-1-3, 3-1-2 GSAC) occupies fifth place with 11 points.
Westmont will be back in action on Wednesday, October 22 when they will face Biola in La Mirada at seven o’clock.
