Cate suffered its first 8-man football Condor League loss on Saturday afternoon, getting shut down at Thacher, 22-3.
The Rams held Thacher’s potent offense to six points in the first half, 14 through three quarters, and were never really out of it until the Toads scored in the final minute.
“It was a great game,” said Cate coach Ben Soto, whose young team falls to 3-3 after reaching CIF’s championship game last season. “I couldn’t ask for any more from my kids.
“We had a game plan. It was to keep it on the ground and to keep their high-powered offense off the field. We did that.”
Soto singled out sophomores Luke Shover, Cormac O’Connor and junior Ugo Nwasike as making productive contributions on the defensive side, as well as seniors Michael McMahon and John Warren.
The Rams are 1-1 in league play with Dunn and Ojai Valley still left on the schedule. First, Cate travels to Monclair Prep for a Saturday afternoon tilt.
