New faces lead Charger attack

Playing with a lineup that lacked several regulars, the Dos Pueblos girls tennis team plugged the holes without problem and earned a 13-5 Channel League victory over Buena on Tuesday.

Shelbi Nigh led the Chargers in singles going 3-0. Nicole Eskenazi won two sets starting out at No. singles for the first time. Sofia Pasternack nearly scored another set for the Chargers, falling to the Bulldogs’ No. 1 singles player, Katherine Hefelfinger, in a tiebreaker.

The Charger singles draw was completely different than the one that had led DP to an 11-2 record and to Division II’s No. 5 ranking this season.

While No. 2 and 3 Hayley Edwards and Lauren Stratman stayed home, No. 1 singles player Erica Cano got her first doubles action this season, pairing up with Nicoletta Bradley for two set wins. The normal No. 1 doubles team of Amy Sagraves-Amy Logan was its normal self in winning two sets without a loss.

Dos Pueblos improves to 12-2, now 5-1 in the Channel League. DP hosts Calabasas in a non-league match on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
