Taryn Mjelde went 3-0 while Katie Mason and Leah Salvucci won their first-ever doubles set as the top-ranked Santa Barbara High girls tennis team cruised to a 15-3 win over visiting Buena, just one day after suffering their first loss of the season against Campbell Hall.
“It was a good match,” said Dons coach Steve Geremia. “We had a chance to look at a lot of different players and see how our younger players match up. Buena is greatly improved over the last month, and they are on the upswing.”
The Dons will need some of the newer faces to step up, as top singles player Rachel Decker-Sadowski has a pulled muscle in the abdominal area, a ruptured bursa sac in her hip and a torn quadriceps.
“There’s no reason to believe she’ll be back in less than a month,” said Geremia.
Also, solid sophomore player Stephanie Thornton is out for the year with a dislocated shoulder and possible torn labrum, and Kinzie McKeown is out for an undetermined length of time with injury as well.
Thanks to players like Haley Hranicky-Gallitzer, whom Geremia described as “probably one of the most improved players in the United States,” the ever-dominant Dons should have the depth to remain one of the favorites for a CIF title.
