The Santa Barbara girls volleyball team is in uncharted waters after losing its second straight match on Saturday, a 20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-10 marathon loss to host Harvard-Westlake.
The Dons (17-3, 3-1) lost consecutive matches for the first time this season and now have plenty of time to think about it, having only one match scheduled in the next 12 days.
“It’s good to get back to the basics with practice,” said coach John Gannon, who claimed weariness was a factor in the outcome. “For us, we need to go back to being a little hungrier like we were earlier in the season.”
Like in the Archbishop Mitty Tournament where the Dons defeated then-No. 1 Marymount before falling in the final to the host.
“At the start we exceeded expectations,” said Gannon of the preseason. “Now we’re coming back a little bit. But these next two weeks we can regroup.”
The Dons face Ventura on Thursday in the first of their final matches of the regular season, all in the Channel League.
