Too bad for Redondo Union having to play the Santa Barbara girls volleyball team on the day of Homecoming, as the Dons quickly moved on to more important matters after a 25-7, 25-12, 25-13 demolishing of the Sea Hawks at JR Richards Gym.
“Today was some of the best high school girls volleyball I’ve ever seen,” said head coach John Gannon. “We just played with an intensity and force that I really haven’t seen this season. Homecoming is tonight, and the girls were pushing so that they would have enough time to get ready for the dance.
“They definitely had a sense of urgency that was unrivaled.”
Setter Natalie Guerra dished out 40 assists to an extremely balanced attack that included at least five kills from Mimi Cuttrell, Eve Ettinger, Emily Rottman, Hadley Simmons and Madison Hamilton. Cuttrell led the team with 11. Katherine Keller was outstanding on defense while collecting 15 digs.
“We played like a freight train,” said an obviously pleased Gannon, whose No. 1-ranked team improves to 15-2 on the season.
A crosstown tilt against San Marcos is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
