A valiant surge came up short for the Cate girls tennis team on Saturday, as the Rams refused to quit despite losing nine out of the first 12 sets to finish on the short end of an 11-7 decision against visiting Pasadena Poly.
Carryn Baker battled hard, losing a tough 10-8 tiebreaker but bouncing back to beat Pasadena Poly’s No. 1 player. Arielle Kubetschek won two of her three sets, while Louisa Dick-Valdez and Lela Puckett came back after losing a tough 5-7 first set and won their next two, 6-3, 6-1.
“I was really pleased with and proud of their deportment on the court in the face of some trying situations,” said Cate coach Barbara DeGroot. “The girls learned a lot from today’s match and are fired up for the remainder of their league matches.”
The Rams are now 3-4 overall and 1-0 in Condor League play.
