Bishop netters nix Carpinteria

Emily Harrington, Brittany Gignac and Devon Stein went a perfect 9-0 in singles play Tuesday, and the Bishop Diego girls tennis team wrapped up the conference season at a perfect 8-0 in the Frontier League.

The Cardinals (11-3, 8-0) dominated rival Carpinteria 14-4, picking up a pair of set in doubles from Brooke Czuleger and Julia Rios to go along with the sweeping effort in singles.

Bishop Diego had already clinched its first league title since 1979, and looks primed to finish strong and make a playoff run. All three singles stars return next year, with Gignac and Harrington each going 21-3 in league this season.

They face Laguna Blanca at the municipal courts at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

I just wanted to note that Bishop’s team has completed its Frontier League season at 8-0. They do not have another Frontier League game remaining. I believe that it is the first title for the girls tennis program in nearly 30 years. It has been a truly great season for the team with all of the girls contributing. However, the trio of Junior singles players in particular (Emily Harrington, Brittany Gignac and Devon Stein) have been dominant all year long. In fact, Harrington and Gignac both finished 21-3 in their league matches, and all three players will be back next year. Yesterday, against Carp, all three of Bishop’s singles players rallied from being down against Carp’s #1 singles player. Harrington was down 4-0 and won 6-4, Gignac was down 5-2 and won 7-5, and Stein was down 5-3 and won 7-6 on a tie breaker. The Stein v. Marquez match up in particular was a thriller with virtually every game being decided on points scored after deuce.
