Yellowjackets sting Royals

The Royals have been in the water a ton lately, and after a rough weekend at the Conejo Tournament, San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton said he saw a lot of improvement in Tuesday’s 11-5 loss to Oxnard.

There’s no rest for the weary, however, and the Royals (3-4) are back in the pool this weekend at the Riverside Invitational Tournament.

Abel Hamilton, Peter Dawson, Ben Kilpatrick, Mac Gostow and Andre Rivera led a balanced attack that was only down 4-3 at halftime.

But a substitution error in the third quarter expelled a Royal starter for the rest of the match and Oxnard took control of momentum by scoring four third-quarter goals.

Goalie Travis Johnson stopped 14 shots from the Yellowjackets. Another solid effort on defense was turned in by Sam Boysel, who did a good job of pestering Oxnard’s best player, Max Grosshans, until getting in foul trouble in the third quarter.

The Royals play again at home on Sept. 30, opening their Channel League season against Buena.
