After an 0-2 start, Roger Kuntz’s San Marcos girls volleyball team is now 5-3 with a third-place finish under its belt in the Dave Mohs Tournament.
“It was just awesome. I couldn’t have written it much better,” said Kuntz on Saturday night.
The Royals began the day by beating La Habra 25-18, 26-24, 15-9 to finish pool play at a perfect 3-0. Then came the playoff bracket, where they handled Huntington Beach Marina easily, 25-15, 25-13.
Up next was Francis Parker, which had just beaten 2005 CIF-champion University. San Marcos played what Kuntz called “the best match our girls have played in three years,” winning 25-17, 20-25, 15-9.
Kuntz said that Flo Chardon emerged as the team’s primary target on the outside, Kristen Kuntz was nearly flawless at setter, Emma Campbell’s passing was automatic and Kristin Schroeder played much bigger than 5-foot-7 on the right side.
Utlimately, the Royals ran out of gas in the semis, losing 25-18, 16-25, 15-10 to Temecula.
“This is a roller-coaster team, but if we play like we did over the weekend, we’ll represent the Channel League in a strong way this season,” said Kuntz.
The Royals travel to Oxnard Tuesday before opening league play by hosting Buena on Thursday at the Thunderhut.
