TUCSON, Ariz. – The UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team had lost each of its last two matches by one goal. One of the two defeats came in overtime. On Sunday, the Gauchos turned the tables, winning 1-0 in overtime at Arizona.
In the 96th minute, junior forward Genelle Ives took a feed from sophomore forward Kylie McDonald and put home a shot from about 10 yards out, giving UCSB the win and ending a brief two-game losing streak. It was the fourth goal of the season for Ives, and it improved the Gauchos’ record to 7-4-0. The Wildcats dropped to 6-4-0.
Although the teams battled to a scoreless tie through regulation and the first five minutes of sudden victory overtime, UCSB dominated the action. The Gauchos finished with an 18-6 shot advantage, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Arizona goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre had eight saves, including five in the first half, to keep her team in the game. On the other end of the field, Santa Barbara freshman Ali Cutler, starting in place of injured sophomore Tammy Lenham, had three saves, including two in the second half, to post her second shutout of the season.
With seven wins, the Gauchos surpassed their win total for the entire 2007 season when they finished with six victories. They will remain on the road to open Big West Conference play on Friday, Oct. 3 at UC Riverside. The match will kick-off at 6:00 p.m.
