Fillmore puts hurt on Cardinals

The Bishop Diego football team had a rough night in Fillmore on Friday, losing 42-3 to the Flashes.

The Cardinals were able to move the ball on offense, as senior quarterback Anthony Martinez completed several passes downfield for big yardage.

But Fillmore capitalized on four red-zone turnovers by Bishop, turning turnovers into points all night long.

“We turned the ball over too much. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” said assistant coach Ralph Molina. “And they were a little bit more physical than us.”

Molina praised the effort of Martinez, saying he “played his heart out. It was a gutsy performance.”

Des Vanderfin caught three Martinez passes for a total of 61 yards on the night. Placekicker Sam Vanderset scored Bishop’s points on a 42-yard field goal before halftime.

The Cardinals return home next Friday night when they will host Santa Paula at 7:30 p.m.
