The Dos Pueblos High girls tennis team, ranked No. 6 in Division II in the latest CIF polls released on Monday, rode the strength of its singles to a 13-5 Channel League victory over rival San Marcos to improve its record to 8-1.

The Chargers’ top three singles players — Erica Cano, Hayley Edwards and Lauren Stratman — swept all their sets including a hard-fought victory for Edwards over San Marcos No. 1 Julian Mannix.

“I knew they were going to be a tough team,” said Cano while watching the final doubles match wrap up. “I’m glad we were able to pull it together. It was  really a group effort so I’m happy about it.”

The Royals put up quite a fight and were led by the No. 1 doubles team of Amy Kinsella and Shelby Zylstra. The duo won two sets, as did the No. 2 tandem of Amy Ransohoff-Christine Pearson. Kinsella-Zylstra continued their consistently strong play this season for the Royals (3-2, 1-1 CL), and Ransohoff and Pearson (both first-year varsity players) provide a formiddable 1-2 punch in doubles.

Dos Pueblos’ top doubles team of Amy Logan and Amy Sagraves escaped unscathed in two sets. Sofia Pasternack and Nicole Eskenazi came on for the No. 1 team and, after getting warmed up, came back from a 2-5 deficit to take the final set of the day.

“I feel like we have so much momentum we could take anyone,” said Cano just before Pasternack-Eskenazi completed its comeback win.

The Chargers host non-league opponent Agoura before next Tuesday’s showdown with No. 1 Santa Barbara. San Marcos continues a busy week on Wednesday with a matchup against Cate. The Royals see the Dons first when they travel to Santa Barbara on Thursday.
