Writing Internship Program

OBJECTIVES

This twelve-week program, timed in conjunction with UCSB’s quarter system, will train students the skills needed to be a professional reporter and writer.

The intern will graduate with a diploma, published works, and a skill-set invaluable to future success in the professional workforce. In addition, after completing the 12-week internship program, the writer will be entered into a freelance writer pool eligible for paid assignments.

12-WEEK PROGRAM SCHEDULE


Week 1 – Shadow Presidio Sports reporter at live event. See first-hand how we collect our sports news and how to conduct yourself as a reporter.

Week 2 – In office. Intern learns how to write an AP style sports article. Practice by helping produce multiple staff reports.

Week 3 – Same as week 2. In office. Practice makes perfect as intern learns how to write an AP style sports article and how to publish online using a Content Management System

Week 4 – The Interview. Intern conducts Q&A at live event to be posted on PresidioSports.com.

Week 5 – Information gathering. Reporters must be resourceful. Participate in activities meant to collect information about local events/people/background

Week 6 – Distribution/Marketing. Writing isn’t worth it if nobody is reading. Learn how to get your work noticed using social media.

Week 7 – Writing on Deadline. Cover a live event and produce a news story to be published on the same day.

Week 9 – Identify final project. Subject matter, complimentary media, audience,

Week 10 – Information gathering for final project: Interviews, research, events.

Week 11 – Writing final project

Week 12 – Publish final project
