Lakey Peterson completed one the best competitive surfing weeks of her young life by finishing as the runner-up in the Women’s Pro Division at the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing on Sunday at the Huntington Beach Pier.Peterson, the 16-year-0ld surfing sensation from Santa Barbara, came up short against Australian and No. 2 world-ranked Sally Fitzgibbons in the final. HUNTINGTON BEACH - Santa Barbara's Lakey Peterson navigated through a field of the world's best women's surfers this week at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, surviving all the way through to the semifinals. Santa Barbara's Lakey Peterson defeated Australia's Tyler Wright in a two-person heat on Friday at the U.S. Open of Surfing, giving Peterson a spot in Saturday's semifinals of the Women's Open competition.It's the first ever U.S. Open for the 15-year-old Peterson, who'll be up against Carissa Moore in one semifinal. HUNTINGTON BEACH — Judging by the sheer size of the event set-up for this year's U.S. Open of Surfing, this week's contest in Huntington Beach is a very big deal.
