UCSB women’s volleyball players Dana Vargas and Stacey Schmidt were both named to the All-West Region’s First Team on Tuesday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced, becoming the only pair of teammates from the Big West to be honored as such.For Vargas it marks the second straight season that she has been honored with the award and it is Schmidt’s first time being awarded. Powered by a career night from senior Dana Vargas, the UCSB women’s volleyball team defeated UC Irvine, 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20 on Friday night at the Thunderdome.Santa Barbara improves to 12-9 overall and 6-2 in the Big West while Irvine falls to 5-16, 1-7. UCSB is now in sole possession of second place in the Big West. SAN LUIS OBISPO — Five Gauchos had double-digit kills and setter Dana Vargas set a career-high with 63 assists as the UCSB women's volleyball team defeat Cal Poly 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 15-10 on Saturday night at Mott Gym.The Gauchos were able to withstand a late rally from the Mustangs to win after capturing the first two games of the match and improved to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in Big West play. Gauchos top Aztecs in finale at USD Invitational

The UCSB women’s volleyball team finished off the USD Invitational on a high note Saturday night, defeating San Diego State, 3-2, in Peterson Gym. Set scores were 26-24, 20-25, 24-26, 25-18, and 15-12.The Gauchos used a .304 team hitting percentage in the final frame to complete the comeback, converting on 61 percent of its side-out opportunities while committing only two errors. Saturday split leaves UCSB in second at USF tourney

Vargas, Saraceno reach All-American status

One of the best women’s volleyball seasons in recent UCSB history was further decorated on Wednesday when the American Volleyball Coaches Association named Rebecca Saraceno as an All-American. Joining her as an All-American was junior Dana Vargas, giving the setter her third major postseason award.   Saraceno, who had 4.45 kills per set and 2.66 digs per set, and Vargas, who passed out 1,297 assists, are the first UCSB players to be named All-Americans since Olivia Waldowski in 2006.
