Long Beach St. shuts down UCSB attack

Despite a balanced attack and a thrilling victory in the first set, the UC Santa Barbara women's team dropped a four-set match to Long Beach State on Saturday night in the Thunderdome.The 49ers, who dropped the Big West opener in September to the Gauchos, improved to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in the Big West with a firm grasp on first place. The UCSB women's soccer team continued to struggle for goals on Sunday, dropping a 1-0 decision at Cal State Northridge. The UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball team, armed with returning All-American Stacey Schmidt, was chosen to finish third in the annual Big West coaches preseason poll released on Thursday.It is the second consecutive year that the Gauchos have been picked to finish third. UCSB nine-game win streak snapped by Riverside

UCSB was looking to complete its second consecutive Big West Conference series sweep on Sunday but came up short as visiting UC Riverside battled back from six run deficit to capture an 11-8 win at Campus Diamond. The Gauchos still captured the series win after posting 3-0 and 7-5 wins in a twin bill on Saturday.
