Andrew Perez, a former Santa Barbara High and SBCC player, shot a 7-under 65 for College of the Desert in the opening round and was the only player to finish under par with a 6-under 138 at the Community College State Championships at Kings Country Club in HanfordPerez topped the 60-player field by six shots. Former Santa Barbara High star Andrew Perez won medalist honors to lead College of the Desert to the team championship at the Southern Cal Men’s Golf Regional on Monday at Bermuda Dunes CC.Perez fired rounds of 68 and 76 for an even-par 144, beating Matt Sobczak of Hancock (36-36) by two shots.Desert won the 10-team compettion with 756 strokes, 36 over par. Johnny Ruiz carded back-to-back rounds of 67 over the weekend to capture this year's Goleta City Championship at Glen Annie Golf Club.Ruiz, a 17-year-old from Carpinteria, was playing at a level all by himself.
