SBSC collects 6-pack of champions at Summer Cup

The Santa Barbara Soccer Club captured six division championships at its annual Summer Cup tournament over the weekend.In all, the club had 17 teams reach the finals out of 29 flights. In some age groups, there were enough teams entered to form two flights — Anacapa and Santa Cruz.The boys championship teams were the Under-16s in the Anacapa Flight, the U14s, and the U10 White squad. Vom Steeg trying to make U.S. team

Justin Vom Steeg was among 119 players from around the country to be selected to attend the U.S. Soccer Under-14 national program’s identification camp in Concord, Mass.Justin, the eldest son Almeria and Tim Vom Steeg, the men’s soccer coach at UCSB, is trying to make the first U14 boys national team, which will compete at the Disney Showcase in Florida in November. SB’s ‘Team Oswego’ captures national AYSO title

Local AYSO U-14 girls all-star team won an AYSO National Games championship last weekend in Palm Beach, Florida.  "Team Oswego" bested over 225 teams at the National Games, held over six days from July 6-11.The Team Oswego girls are 12-to-14 year old Santa Barbara area soccer stars.  They’ve been winning tournaments together since January 2010, including the tough AYSO Area 10W championship.  At the National Games, they scored 22 goals against their opponents and only allowed 3 goals.Team … [Read more...]

Goleta teams thunder into softball nationals

Sparked by the dominating pitching of Hailee Rios and a potent offense, the Goleta 10-under Thunder girls softball team won the Central California ASA Championship national qualifying tournament in Santa Maria.The Thunder, an all-star squad from the Goleta Valley Girls Softball Association, outscored their opponents 40-5 and hit an impressive .469 as a team during the two-day tournament.Rios, meanwhile, was nearly untouchable on the mound. The biggest trophy a U-12 soccer team can win was brought home on Sunday by the Santa Barbara Soccer Club, as Rudy Ybarra’s boys took down teams from all over the western United States en route to winning the Far West Region IV National Championship in Albuquerque, NM.Shea Blackman, Jacob Blacker and Juan Pablo Alvarez each scored for Santa Barbara in its 3-0 victory over Colorado Arsenal in the championship showdown. Carpinteria takes out Rowland Heights for AYSO title

The Carpinteria AYSO Warriors boys under-16 played their sixth tournament this season in Cypress this past weekend in a tournament that always brings good quality teams at all levels. Santa Barbara and Goleta's girls Under-14 AYSO team, otherwise known as "Team Oswego," claimed the Area 10W championship over President's Day weekend  and will be headed to Palm Beach, Florida this July for the AYSO National Games.Oswego beat all star teams from Carpinteria, Ventura, Santa Paula, Ojai, Oxnard and Camarillo.Oswego won the 10W championship on Valentine's Day in double-overtime. The Santa Barbara Soccer Club Boys Under 12 White Team won the  prestigious Coast Soccer League Cup tournament in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday.
